Thanksgiving Food Box Project

What is it?

The  Society of St. Vincent de Paul has organized  this project since 1976 to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal to those in Ada County who need assistance.  It is a community effort with churches, businesses, schools, and civic groups participating.  OLR participates in this project by providing volunteer help and donating food and/or money.

In 2015, over 3,000 families were provided with a Thanksgiving meal.  OLR provided meals to 226 of these families plus over $1,000. to purchase food for more boxes.  A truck was donated to transport the food to the fairgrounds.

What can I do?

In November, parishioners sign up to donate a box or money.  The weekend before Thanksgiving, boxes are collected and taken to the fair grounds where Ada County residents pick up their boxes the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Volunteers are needed for any of the above activities: help coordinating this project for OLR, sign-up weekends for our parish, sign-up day for Ada County residents, collecting the food the weekend before Thanksgiving at OLR, and help at the fairgrounds for setting up and distributing the food boxes.  Donations are sought for a truck for transportation to the fairgrounds.

Why Participate?

Some quotes from St. Vincent de Paul say it all.

"Go to the poor.  You will find God."

"Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another"

"The poor have much to teach you.  You have much to learn."
